What is tedx?In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxEastGrandRapidsHigh where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxEastGrandRapidsHigh event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
So why did we bring TEDx and its mission to East? The licensee of this TEDx event, Marie Lachance, to break the negative stereotype surrounding teens: that they are lazy, irresponsible, and our ideas are simply meant to be discarded. She knew that there were members in her community who had 'ideas worth sharing', and believed TEDx to be a perfect platform for those students to share their ideas and have them met with a sense of legitimacy and respect from adults and colleagues. TEDxEastGrandRapidsHigh is a youth event, meaning all of the organizers are under the age of 18. This annual event is made to empower teens share their ideas to benefit the greater community. |
